Base pay range $220,000.00/yr - $300,000.00/yr Overview An established and expanding law firm in Serra Mesa is seeking an experienced Finance & Accounting Professional to serve as the financial right hand to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). This executive-level position will oversee all aspects of financial strategy, reporting, and operations, while also playing a key role in driving firm growth, profitability, and process optimization. This is a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves role that requires both strategic insight and the ability to operate in the financial trenches. Must have prior experience in a Legal/Law firm industry with a deep understanding of Accounting, FP&A, Billing, and partner compensation. Responsibilities Partner with the COO and Managing Partner to develop strategic and operational goals tied to firm expansion and performance. Introduce profitability and productivity analysis by attorney, practice group, and office location to support data-driven decision-making. Collaborate with the Managing Partner to evaluate and improve firmwide training programs to increase efficiency. Support the COO in long-range planning, organizational design, and operational risk management. Lead all finance operations: AP/AR, general ledger, bank reconciliations, payroll, and cash management. Oversee monthly financial reporting, partner/shareholder distributions, practice group performance analysis, and projection updates. Lead the firm's budgeting and forecasting cycles; present formal budgets and monthly performance results to the COO and Board. Prepare and file all federal, state, and local tax returns, including Schedule K-1s for the firm's Equity Partners. Work closely with outside CPA firms on tax returns, pension plans, 401(k) plans, and annual financial reviews. Spearhead implementation and integration of ERP and billing systems (e.g., Juris, Elite, Aderant); ensure data flows across finance and IT platforms are aligned for maximum productivity. Develop and maintain policy and procedures manuals across all departments. Analyze and resolve electronic billing rejections, minimize appeals, and streamline compliance with client billing protocols. Lead collections efforts, including monthly partner-level meetings to address aging receivables and cash flow strategy. Drive continuous improvement in the firm's financial health through accountability and actionable reporting. Manage and mentor the internal finance and accounting team. Support talent development, succession planning, and cross-functional leadership training. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field CPA Highly Preferred 10+ years of progressive leadership in accounting and finance Law firm experience required 6+ years in senior level finance position Expertise in financial modeling, budgeting, and strategic planning Experience with ERP and legal billing systems (e.g., Juris, Elite, Aderant, Clio) Deep knowledge of GAAP, trust accounting, collections, and compensation modeling Proven success in cross-departmental collaboration, particularly with IT and HR Willingness to be hands-on and actively engaged in the day-to-day financial functions Why Join Us?
